If I had to pick a favourite time of year to photograph a wedding it would undoubtably be Autumn/Winter time. From late September onwards the light in the UK becomes low, soft and golden. During the Summer months (the most popular time to marry) the light can be harsh in the middle of the day as the sun sits directly overhead creating hard shadows. When the Autumn equinox comes along at around the 22nd of September the sun sits at a lower elevation above the horizon which means good light for most of the day.
Some of the most memorable weddings I have photographed have been in December when we were lucky enough to have a beautiful sunny day. If you are worried about the light and weather in winter make sure you pick a venue that has big airy rooms that let in plenty of light so that if you have a gorgeous day outside but it is too cold for the reception outdoors, you’ll have plenty of light flooding into the venue. Also remember to book your ceremony as early in the day as you can get away with. So many church weddings in the winter seem to happen at 3pm which means when you leave church it will be dark outside. Try to opt for a 12pm ceremony or at the latest 2pm to allow for time to get to your reception and have enough light for those all important pictures of you together as newly weds.
In December I had the pleasure of photographing Polly and Matt’s wedding at Bovey Castle. There was so much I loved about their wedding day not least spending time with such a warm and gentle couple. It was my first wedding at Bovey Castle and although I was slightly intimidated by it’s grand facade I […]
I have had so many beautiful winter weddings this year and Sonya and Stephen’s wedding was no exception. Celebrated at Millbrook Estate in glorious sunshine, they shared their day with their 3 children. Playful and loving would be the perfect words to describe this couple. Sonya was very sure that she wanted her photos to […]
For about 3 years running I was lucky enough to photograph a December wedding at Hotel Endsleigh. Laura and Dom’s was one of these beautiful winter days. I have always adored Hotel Endsleigh, ever since my first visit there way back in 2008. I remember being a little star struck by it’s elegance as I […]
